Lovely review of the club

On Saturday, Roy Margetson wrote this lvoely review of our club. You can read it and see his photos on our Facebook page.

A glorious sunny day here in Suffolk for another Isthmian North Division game, this time between Mildenhall Town and the northerners from Norfolk, Wroxham.

A well run club with 10 good people, paid bar staff and groundsman, with a perfect grass pitch. Speaking to the Chairman - Bill Flynn, a real character, Jon Sadler the general manager and accountant, and Ryan Townsin the vice chairman, who all give me the run down on this friendly town club which is a real hub of the community.

The club, originally founded in 1898, have been at their current ground since post WW2. The pitch is looking fantastic, the clubhouse is spacious with large tv screens, a hospitality suite, a main seated stand on that side with another covered stand. Opposite you have the Cameron Hotel (one of the clubs sponsors) seated stand. Behind both goals are at present huge conifer hedges. Those will be going soon at the club plan to erect covered terraced stands behind the goals with fencing/brickwork to finish off.

The club have the RAF bases nearby with Mildenhall and Lakenheath. The Americans have their own base there and we’re expecting a number of them to turn up today and be educated with proper football!

This is a real 6 pointer today as both clubs, at this early stage, are in the wrong half of the table so concentrating on the league as they’re out of the cups.

Going back 3 years, the club decided to relieve the manager of his duties and after the game they met giving him his notice on the pitch. That sounds like a first! The last game of the season was still to be played and half the team had walked out upset that their manager had been sacked! A new manager came in quickly and found a number of players to complete their last game of the season. It obviously worked as last season they were Thurlow Nunn Easter Counties champions by 14 points.

The clubs long standing goalkeeper, since age 17, is Josh Pope brother of Nick Pope at Newcastle. In a bizarre quirk of fate, both goalkeepers were sent off in the same week. Coincidence or what. Today Pope puts on a terrific performance keeping Mildenhall in the game with 4 excellent saves. Another player that shone out was the right back who gets forward and pulled one goal back for the home side. A classy player at this level.
